Ecuador, 2002: The underground local scene from Ambato gives rise to SUDAKAYA, a band whose music began with clear reggae & ska influences, and that has now evolved to the creation of a unique, essentially urban Latin sound.
In 2004 their first CD "Todo Va Bien", which was independently edited, opened a myriad doors for them, allowing them to participate in the main Ecuadorian festivals for many years (Fète de la Musique, Quitofest, and Festivalfff).
In the year 2004, Sudakaya starts its first South American Tour, "Sudaka 2004", performing in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, and Argentina. On their second visit to Argentina in 2005, Sudakaya’s style reaches thousands of people with their participation in the Argentinean festivals, Oye Reggae and Cosquin Siempre Rock.
Back in Ecuador, the band continues performing across the country's different cities. With the first 3000 copies out of print, hundreds of pirate copies sold and thousands of fans throughout the continent, SUDAKAYA has been defined by the press and specialized media as “one of the best bands in the country”. In 2006 they published "Selekta Combinación" E.P. CD, with the collaboration of Alerta (Colombian reggae band) and MC Kaer from Starflam (Belgium’s Hip Hop).
In 2007, the new CD production started, and by the end of 2008 they released "Terminal", an album which clearly indicates the evolution and experience gained throughout the years of fighting in the music battlefield. "Terminal", twelve songs that reflect melancholy, revolt, heartache, Latin pride, and the existential rawness of human beings, in gray, frantic times. Definitively a darker, more mature record that keeps the fire and energy pumping in every song.
In May 2009 Sudakaya starts Tour Terminal, which tours the entire country and takes the band for the first time to Europe. Sudakaya performs in 20 shows across the continent, including Germany, France, Belgium, The Netherlands and Spain, delivering their music in festivals as renowned as FUSION FEST (Berlin) and FIMU (France). In October of the same year, the band is invited to festival Altavoz (Medellín), the second largest stage in Colombia.
In January 2010 Sudakaya starts the year as the leading band in Carnaval de Negros y Blancos in Pasto, Colombia. By the end of January, the band releases its first professional video clip "Salgo," a product directed by renowned Chilean director Sebastián Cardemil. The clip rapidly reaches the first spots in the popularity lists of some of the most important music networks in Latin America: MTV, Much Music and Telehit. By April, the band releases its second video clip "Sale el sol," shot in Medellín Colombia and directed by Fernando Puerta from the film company "Locomotora." The international image of Sudakaya is consolidated, and at the same time they have been invited to the most important international music festival in Latin America ROCK AL PARQUE in Bogota Colombia.
Throughout its existence Sudakaya has shared stage with Vicentico, Ky-Many Marley, Auténticos Decadentes, Zoe, Asian Dub Foundation, Karamelo Santo, Providencia, Fidel Nadal, Bomba Stereo, Pablo Molina, La Bersuit, Los Tetas, Andrés Calamaro, Alika, Easy Star All Stars, and many others, being the leading band of every festival in Ecuador.
Despite its long trajectory, Sudakaya remains to be an independent band, working with self-management, and representing its own independent label, Audioregistros Sudamericana, since 2006. The band envisions a long way to walk in the future, and continues to deliver music with its sincerity, truthfulness and heart.
